Water shortage in Mathare slum in Nairobi

Nairobi (Kenya), Mar 21 (EFE/EPA) - (Camera: Daniel Irungu) The dense population of Nairobi's Mathare slum amplifies the water demand, but the wells provided by the government do not meet the needs.

Middlemen take advantage of the situation, buying water and reselling it to consumers, an illegal exchange that prompted the Kenyan government to launch the water police unit last year to combat vandalism and theft of vital water sources and sanitation infrastructure.
