Turtle farm reopens in Mexico after two years of closure over legal dispute

Isla Mujeres, Jun 16 (EFE).- A turtle farm ‘Tortugranja’ on Mexican island of Isla Mujeres was allowed to reopen Friday morning after almost two years of closure due to legal conflicts.

Over 10 specimens of various species of sea turtles that could not be relocated at the time of conflict managed to survive.

TRANSLATION:

1. GISELA MALDONADO SALDAÑA, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE TORTUGUERO DEL CARIBE GROUP.

- Tortugranja is an emblematic site for the sea turtle conservation program at the national level. It was the first place that started the turtle conversation. That's why it's called 'Tortugranja' (turtle farm), it was like a farm where turtles were raised.

2. ATENEA GÓMEZ, MUNICIPAL PRESIDENT OF ISLA MUJERES.

- This is where the conservation for Mexico was born. This is where the first conservation project begins. It was the first turtle camp in the entire country, before the one in Oaxaca, before the one in Baja California, before other places. It started here, in Quintana Roo.
