Turkey's dog overpopulation to be debated in Parliament

Istanbul (Turkey), Jun 12 (EFE) - Four million unowned dogs roam the streets of Turkey, according to estimates by the government of the Eurasian country, which has announced a project to reduce their number, amid controversy from those who see with “terror” the presence of animals and those who call for “sharing love” with them.

The proposed law, which the Turkish Parliament is expected to debate soon, envisages transferring stray dogs to kennels, where they can be adopted within 30 days.

Dilara Berk, head veterinarian of the stray animal shelter in Kemerburgaz, Istanbul:

''Our unit is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If an animal is brought in, it is treated; when it is recovered, it is sterilized".

''Dogs are also tested for temperament. We prioritize sterilization. And the animals that are brought to us are sterilized, according to law 5199, and we leave them back in the place where they were found".
