GUATEMALA JUSTICE

Trial of former military chief for indigenous genocide begins in Guatemala

Guatemala City, Apr 5 (EFE).- The genocide trial of retired general Benedicto Lucas García began in Guatemala City on Friday and has attracted a great deal of attention from the victims' families, who have been waiting for justice for more than four decades.

Lucas García is accused of overseeing military operations in northwestern Guatemala between 1981 and 1982, during which more than 1,770 indigenous people were killed by the armed forces in the midst of the internal armed conflict that lasted from 1960 to 1996.

At the age of 92, Lucas García is facing charges for the deaths of 844 indigenous people, for which the Guatemalan Public Prosecutor's Office holds him responsible. The remaining deaths are linked to the dictatorship of Efraín Ríos Montt (1982–1983). (Camera: DANILO RAMÍREZ).
