Transgender community in the Indian village of Koovagam celebrates its identity with a religious festival

Koovagam (India), Apr 24 (EFE/EPA) - Hundreds of Hindu devotees celebrated Wednesday the Koovagam Festival, also called Koothandavar Temple Festival, an annual celebration of the trans community, which takes place in the village of Koovagam.

The Koovagam festival which honors the warrior Aravan, son of Arjuna, a legendary character from the Mahabharata, and the serpent princess Ulupi, is not only a religious celebration, but it also serves as a way for trans people to celebrate their identity and raise awareness about the issues facing this community.
