Tourists evacuated by wildfires in Hawaii waiting for a plane to leave island of Maui

Maui (Hawaii, United States), Aug 11 (EFE/EPA) - (Camera: Etienne Laurent) At least 55 people have died in the devastating active wildfire that is affecting Hawaii and particularly the town of Lahaina, located on the island of Maui.

"As firefighting efforts continue, 17 more deaths have been confirmed in the active fire in Lahaina," the county of Maui said on its website on Thursday afternoon, although it confirmed two more deaths on Twitter later in the day, bringing the total to 55.

The office said Thursday morning that the fire ravaging Lahaina was 80 per cent contained, while the Pulehu fire in the Kihei area was 70 per cent contained and the Upcountry fire was still being assessed by firefighters for containment.
