Tokyo shrine holds ice water bathing ritual for New Year's blessing

Tokyo, Jan 14 (EFE/EPA).- Eighty-five participants braved the cold by bathing in freezing water in a traditional ceremony at Tokyo's Teppozu Inari shrine on Sunday.

Dressed only in loincloths, the participants aim to purify their souls and pray for good health in the new year.

This ceremony of endurance in freezing water is a testament to the mental and physical strength of the participants and reflects the enduring traditions that form a vital part of Japan's cultural heritage.

Held annually, these ceremonies are believed to cleanse the spirit and bring good fortune and health for the year ahead. (Camera: FRANCK ROBICHON).
