PORTUGAL LABOUR DAY

Thousands march in Portugal for better salaries and pensions

Lisbon (Portugal), May 1 (EFE).- Thousands of Portuguese took to the streets this Wednesday to demand better salaries and pensions during the Labour Day demonstrations, in which the Carnation Revolution, which turned 50 on April 25, was very present.

Mariana Mortágua, coordinator of the Left Bloc: "There is data coming out today that is worrying, but they are a picture that we know. In Portugal, people work more hours than in the rest of the countries in Europe. Salaries are lower than the European average, they are among the lowest. And there is more precariousness, more temporary contracts, less stability in life than in other countries in Europe. And we know that the country becomes stronger, grows more, is more equal, if it were able to pay better salaries, provide better working conditions, provide more stability in employment, but also fewer hours of work so that we can live, have time for family and leisure."
