Thousands of Catholics flock to Fatima shrine for last major pilgrimage of the year

Fátima (Portugal), Oct 13 (EFE) - (Images: Miguel Conceição) Thousands of Catholics flock today to the sanctuary of Fátima on the final day of the last great pilgrimage of the year, marked by the controversy in Portugal over child abuse within the Catholic Church.

After the traditional night vigil on the 12th, which last night gathered several thousand people, the faithful advanced today along the esplanade of the sanctuary - some 130 kilometers north of Lisbon - either on foot or on their knees.

The ceremony was led by the president of the Bishops' Conference, José Ornelas, who has rejected his link to the cover-up of child abuse in the Church.

INCLUDES IMAGES OF THOUSANDS OF CATHOLICS AT THE SANCTUARY OF FÁTIMA DURING THE FINAL DAY OF THE LAST GREAT PILGRIMAGE OF THE YEAR.

THE IMAGES WERE TAKEN ON OCTOBER 12, 2022.

INCLUDES TOTALS FROM PILGRIMS ANTONIO FERREIRA AND ARMANDO LIMAS:

TRANSLATION OF TOTALS:

Antonio Ferreira: "I believe that the Church itself is slowly learning the reality of the issue of sexual abuse. If it really exists, it has to be punished. That is what I understand".

2. Amandio Lima: "It is a weekday and secondly there is the cost, which at the moment is being very, very high".
