THAILAND PROTESTS

Thais take to the streets of Bangkok to demand resignation of PM

Bangkok, Aug 23 (EFE/EPA).- (Camera: Diego Azubel) Dozens of people took to the streets of Bangkok on Tuesday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha.

Under the Thai Constitution, a prime minister must not hold office for more than eight years.

While opposition parties point out that Prayut's eight-year term began when he became prime minister in August 2014 after leading a coup, his supporters claim that his term began with the implementation of the new constitution in April 2017.

A third group says the eight years started when he was elected prime minister in the March 2019 election.
