Ten 'picaos' revive a 16th century penitential rite in San Vicente, Spain

San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja), March 28 (EFE).- A total of ten disciplinarians have revived this Thursday the tradition of the 'picaos' in San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja), where every Holy Week a group of anonymous penitents flagellate themselves to perform an ancestral rite that dates back to the 16th century.
