Taiwan president to ask for review of polemical legislative package

Taipei, Jun 24 (EFE).- Taiwanese President William Lai said Monday he would request an interpretation from the constitutional court on the legality of a controversial reform package ratified with this opposition’s majority last week by parliament, saying it could compromise separation of powers.

“The president is the guardian of the democratic constitution and, given that these amendments raise questions of unconstitutionality and confuse the provisions of separation of powers and supervision of the constitution, as president I have the unavoidable duty to act,” the president said.
