EL SALVADOR JUSTICE

The start of the trial in El Salvador against the death squad is suspended for the second time

San Miguel (El Salvador), Aug 14 (EFE).- A court in El Salvador suspended this Monday for the second time the start of a trial against a group of retired soldiers accused of being part of an Army death squad and accused of murdering five people in 1981 in the context of the internal armed conflict.

STATEMENT BY DAVID MORALES, HEAD OF TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE OF THE CRISTOSAL HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATION:

This person, Aníbal Alvarado, has been on the run, but evidently he knew about the case and has appointed a private defense attorney at the last minute, who is also asking for time to study the process.

It is regrettable that after 42 years have passed since this crime provoked by a death squad and after more than 2 years of reopened judicial process, the public hearing is suspended again, beyond the reasons that give rise to this, it is a revictimizing situation.

We would hope that the Court, given the relevance of the case, can reschedule soon. This is the first case of a war crime, of a crime against humanity and also of a death squad to reach the public hearing stage after the amnesty law was repealed.

We understand the reasons that have been expressed for the suspension of the hearing, but it is still one more frustration, one more pain, one more re-victimizing situation for the family.
