SRI LANKA CRISIS

Sri Lankan NPP supporters demand local elections amid economic turmoil

Colombo, Jun 8 (EFE/EPA).- Thousands of supporters of the National People's Power (NPP) of Sri Lanka staged a major protest outside the Election Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Thursday. The demonstration demanded the holding of municipal elections amid the country's political and economic crisis.

The demonstrators, brandishing placards and shouting slogans, accused the government of trying to postpone the elections for fear of the people's mandate. The call for new elections reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration's handling of the worst economic recession in the country's history.

Sri Lanka has been grappling with a severe economic crisis for more than a year, largely attributed to a lack of foreign exchange reserves. (Camera: CHAMILA KARUNARATHNE).
