RODRÍGUEZ ZAPATERO

Former Spanish PM Rodríguez Zapatero: ETA surrendered under my mandate

Madrid, Mar 13 (EFE).- (Camera: Juan Yagüe) Former Spanish PM José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero told EFE in an interview that the best thing that happened under his mandate was the end of ETA, which was "forever" and "in exchange for nothing".

SOUNDBITES OF FORMER SPANISH PM JOSÉ LUIS RODRÍGUEZ ZAPATERO DURING AN INTERVIEW WITH EFE:

"Yes, I have highlighted it. I don't think it was because of it, but under my mandate...The nuance is important. The journalists, you know that words have their importance, all of them. It was under my mandate when ETA declined, surrendered and, what is more important, I have highlighted and it is something that indeed in the big moments of democracy must remain: it was forever. It is the most important thing. It was forever. They decided to stop violence forever. This is very important and also, in exchange for nothing, neither in political terms nor any other kind (of terms). I could ask myself, well, I don't wish to be immodest, but I could wonder if, during the forty years that we face ETA'S terrorism in democracy, we thought that if it could be an end in which they decided to surrender getting anything in return. Like this, this way, forever."
