MEXICO DROUGHT

Severe drought kills thousands of fish in northern Mexico

Cuauhtémoc, Mexico, Jun 15 (EFE).- The drought affecting three-quarters of Mexico has killed hundreds of thousands of fish in Chihuahua, where farmers describe an "apocalyptic" scene in what was once one of the country's largest lagoons.

The drying up of the Bustillos lagoon has left tonnes of decomposing fish, raising concerns about potential health risks to nearby communities.

Saúl Sauzameda Montes, a local leader, explained that the army, along with federal and state authorities, will help residents bury the dead fish to avoid a health crisis.

The reduction in water levels has significantly affected local agriculture, the main economic activity in the region, and fears are growing of running out of drinking water. (Camera: RÁUL MORALES).
