Rupiah weakens, causing surge in soybean, tofu prices in Indonesia

Depok, Jun 27 (EFE/EPA).- The weakening trend in the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar on Thursday has caused soybean prices to increase.

The impact of rising soybean prices means that one of Indonesia's most favorite foods, tofu and soybean cake, also rises. As much as 80 percent of Indonesia's soybeans come from imports every year.

The soybean trade balance is always in deficit, Indonesia's average imports reach 2 million-2.5 million tons per year.

In the last five years, Indonesia has only been able to meet its soybean needs from its own production, amounting to 9.15% of its total needs. (Camera: ADI WEDA).
