G7 SUMMIT

Risks, benefits of IA to be addressed in the 50th G7 summit

Rome, Jun 10 (EFE) - The advantages and risks of artificial intelligence (AI) will be addressed at the G7 summit, whose leaders will meet from Thursday in the Italian region of Apulia to discuss its future regulation, among other related geopolitical issues.

"I believe that the intervention of the European IA Law is strategic, mainly because it puts us at the head of a vision. Europe is the mother of the world's laws, it is the cradle of jurisprudence. And it is valuable that it has this regulatory capacity. But, at the same time, these regulations often run the risk of depowering or slowing down investment".

"Regarding artificial intelligence, in my opinion, we are on the same path, that of not blocking innovation. Innovation cannot be blocked. When technology arrives, you have to accept it, embrace it, and try to make it, let's say, as little harmful as possible to human beings. So put, I say, milestones on the road to innovation. Copyright protection, the identification of content produced with AI, and the fight against deep fakes are the three points that have concerned us the most and that we have introduced to a bill voted in April by the Council of Ministers that will now go to Parliament."

"Precisely about the democratic danger that AI can pose, I believe that there is an element that is extremely harmful to information, which is deepfake. Many times we think of deepfake as an almost ironic phenomenon, between the playful, but in reality, let's think, for example, of a false audio of a politician, a false audio that reaches thousands of mobile phones in our country and can lead citizens to think that politician really says what is contained in that audio and move public opinion and perhaps change its intention regarding democratic expression. This is very dangerous and that is why we have made an intervention that strengthens the penalties for the crime of deepfake."

"Today we can establish regulation, establish standards, but for a phenomenon that is constantly evolving. We do not know exactly what is being developed today in the world's artificial intelligence laboratories. We are based on what we know today, but a rule, a regulation must be open because, on the contrary, it cannot follow a process."

"I had the opportunity to talk to a young Indian engineer from Chat GPT Open Eye, which also develops technologies for publishing. He asked me why Italian publishing is so concerned about this process. I explained to him the reasons for the fragility of the system and he said, look, from our point of view the current standards are fine I said, they are fine, I certainly understand it also because they are not there. So it's like a fine line, right, are we falling behind? I don't know strictly, let's play the game."

"The European rules are wonderful and protective for our world, but we have to talk with China, Japan, Korea, and we have to do so with the United States. But we also have to talk with all the non-European countries, because we have to think that one of the main disinformation risks today is the Russian information issue."

“If we can also join forces within the G7, it is certainly an important means of pressure, including economic pressure, on the non-G7 countries”.
