CORONAVIRUS BRAZIL

Rio carnival to return after pandemic hiatus

Rio de Janeiro, Feb 25 (EFE).- Rio de Janeiro's famed Carnival will return to the streets in 2022 as Brazil's most famous festival after the pandemic canceled last year's festivities. (Camera: JANAINA QUINET/ANTONIO LACERDA).

B-ROLL OF SHOPS, PORTELA SAMBA SCHOOL, AND SAMBADROME MARQUES DE SAPUCAÍ, IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL.

SOUND BITES: CARLOS MAGALHAES, PRESIDENT OF THE PORTELA SAMBA SCHOOL (IN PORTUGUESE).

TRANSLATION: I think the worst has already passed. The worst of all is the uncertainty. Carnival is about making commitments and contracts. People expect to receive their payments and in order to pay, we need money, which in turn depends on political pressure. All this is a big mediation game.
