Vienna, Jun 25 (EFE).- According to the United Nations (UN), drug production and trafficking have a much higher impact on the Amazon basin than previously estimated. These illicit activities contribute to the growth of an illegal economy that not only fuels deforestation, but also facilitates other illicit and environmentally damaging practices that affect both the ecosystem and indigenous communities. The recently published World Drug Report 2023, launched on Sunday in Vienna, highlights the increase in drug cultivation, trafficking, and environmental crime in the Amazon basin. This worrying trend can be attributed, at least in part, to the region's abundant natural resources and the lack of effective governance. (Camera: CLARA ANTÓN).
