US relaxes restrictions but most Covid cases go undetected

Washington, Aug 17 (EFE), (Camera: Jorge Dastis) .- The United States health authorities continue to relax restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic, but more and more data indicates that a large number of infections go unnoticed, which could be contributing to the appearance of new variants.

This is at least the conclusion of a study, published this Wednesday in the prestigious medical journal Jama, which shows that more than half of the people infected with the omicron variant in a hospital in Los Angeles (California) never found out that they had the illness.

"It turns out that more than half of these people did not know it. And when we tried to look at the reasons for their ignorance, we saw that most had no symptoms," one of its main authors, Dr. Susan Cheng, explains to Efe.
