THAILAND ELECTIONS

Recreational cannabis debate heats up ahead of elections in Thailand

Bangkok, May 11 (EFE).- The lucrative business of recreational cannabis, which has made Thailand the marijuana hub of Asia, is one of the issues that most divide parties and voters ahead of the upcoming elections on Sunday.

The priorities of the Thai people lie elsewhere, such as employment, inflation, or tourism recovery. However, the emergence of marijuana shops since the decriminalization of cannabis cultivation in 2022 is an issue with little consensus, with the strongest opposition coming from opposing parties. TRANSLATION: If there is a change of government and the Move Forward Party comes to power, they might legalize marijuana only for medical purposes instead of recreational use. The current societal problems are related to marijuana, and if it can be controlled and used for medical purposes, or if licensed shops can sell it, it could be a positive development. However, if it is sold on the streets, it may be too accessible and not suitable for children who lack the knowledge to use marijuana safely.
