LEBANON RAMADAN

Ramadan nights are tinged with oriental magic in Beirut

Beirut (Lebanon), Mar 26 (EFE) - (Camera: Noemí Jabois) Decorations reminiscent of 'The Thousand and One Nights', traditional delicacies, henna tattoo artists and even stilt walkers come to life every evening in Beirut to fill the holy month of Ramadan with magic, in an attempt to dispel the difficulties Lebanon is experiencing in the midst of the conflict with Israel.

The organisers of the 'Layali Zaman' event have converted a 10,000 square metre space into an ancient 'khan', the arcade-lined squares with shops and rooms where centuries ago traders congregated during their Middle Eastern travels.

In true 'khan' style, more than 30 food stalls and 70 ephemeral shops selling traditional Lebanese products dot the fringes of the Beirut Forum, while in the centre hundreds of people smoke water pipes between bites.
