PHILIPPINES PROTEST

Protest over China's "harassment" of Philippine contingents in South China Sea

Macati (Philippines), June 11 (EFE/EPA).- Protesters in Macati on Tuesday criticized China's "harassment" of Philippine contingents in the disputed waters of the South China Sea during a rally in front of the Chinese consular office.

Protesters claimed that aggressive maneuvers by the Chinese Coast Guard and defense units against Philippine vessels have been documented and have endangered the lives of Philippine contingents in several areas of the disputed waters.

The president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, warned this Monday that his armed forces must be prepared for the growth of "external threats" due to the proximity of the north of the archipelago with Taiwan and the growing tension with China.

Tensions between Manila and Beijing have increased after Marcos Jr. comes to power in 2022., who has strengthened his country's security ties with Washington, in contrast to the rapprochement with Beijing initiated by his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte.
