Portuguese protest against fascism, worried about the far right

Lisbon (Portugal), April 25 (EFE).- Thousands of Portuguese people filled Lisbon's Avenida da Liberdade this Thursday to shout, carnation in hand, "Fascism never again", in a parade for the 50th anniversary of the fall of the dictatorship that was marked by the feeling of concern about the rise of the extreme right in the country.

The half century of the Carnation Revolution has been commemorated a month and a half after the elections that gave 50 deputies to the far-right Chega party, something unprecedented in the 50 years of democracy and which has contributed to the traditional march being more massive than ever.

1.- "I haven't been here for a long time and I thought that this year, after the election results, it was important to be here"

Alda:

1.- "50 years later, I think we could be much better off, no doubt. We had a democracy a bit out of sync with reality, with what a democracy should be. Anyway, it is better that we are like this than in the past, as we were before April 25th, but I had much more ambition for our country. When it was April 25 I had the idea that we were going to change many more things, and that we were going to evolve much faster and that there should be an equal quality of life, quality of life for the people, and there is not. As the years went by, a distance between social classes was formed again".

2- "We have to improve the situation of our country, because there were elections a short time ago and a fascist party appeared in the country. I say it with all the letters, Chega is fascist. And I thought that this was impossible, that there would not be a party with these characteristics that would have so many votes. In a way, it is a concern for me. But the struggle continues, we are here for that".
