POPE AUDIENCE

Pope: "It cannot be tolerated that the Mediterranean becomes a tomb"

Vatican City, Sep 27 (EFE) - (Camera: Antonello Nusca) Pope Francis said on Wednesday that we cannot tolerate the Mediterranean becoming a tomb or a place of conflict, during his address at the general audience held on Wednesday in St Peter's Square.

The Pope made this reflection, recalling his trip on 22-23 September to Marseille, France, to close the Mediterranean Meetings, an event where bishops and young people from the region addressed the issue of migration.

TRANSLATION:

"The Mediterranean is the cradle of civilisation, and a cradle is for life. It is not tolerable that it should become a tomb, and it is not tolerable that it should become a place of conflict. No. The Mediterranean Sea is the very opposite of the clash of civilisations, of war, of human trafficking.

Sisters and brothers, this hope cannot and must not be faded; on the contrary, it must be organised, it must be translated into long-term, medium-term and short-term action.

It is necessary to give hope to our European societies, especially to the new generations, in what it has always been called to be: a mosaic of civilisation and hope".
