PHILIPPINES TYPHOON

Philippines battles floods after devastation caused by back-to-back typhoons

Manila, Aug 31 (EFE/EPA).- The Philippines faced escalating flooding on Thursday after back-to-back onslaughts from Typhoon Saola and Tropical Storm Haikui.

Although Typhoon Saola has left Philippine jurisdiction, its lingering aftermath, coupled with the presence of Tropical Storm Haikui near the northern provinces, is amplifying the influence of the southwest monsoon.

As a result, western Luzon is experiencing increased rainfall, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Streets are turning into waterways, and residents and businesses are having to cope with the impact of the deluge.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the impact of Typhoon Saola alone has been considerable, affecting more than 305,000 people. (Camera: FRANCIS MALASIG).
