Pet cloning business in Spain: 55,000 euros for a dog, 50,000 for a cat

Marbella (Málaga), Jun 16 (EFE) - The cloning of pets has become a booming business in countries such as the United States, China and South Korea, which has more recently joined Spain, where for about 55,000 euros a clinic in Marbella can create a genetic copy of your dog or cat through a reproduction technique that is legal, but that poses an ethical and moral dilemma.

In 1996, a group of scientists from the Roslin Institute in Scotland managed to clone a mammal from an adult cell for the first time in history. Thus Dolly the sheep was born, which became a scientific milestone and opened the door to a new world, that of genetic engineering.

Since then, animal cloning has become popular and is a common practice in the world of camels and horses, since a purebred specimen can be worth more than one million euros.

If cloning an equine, which costs about 75,000 euros, makes economic sense, in the case of dogs and cats the emotional aspect prevails.
