POPE AUDIENCE

El papa alerta sobre la tristeza, que "es un demonio astuto"

Vatican City, Feb 7 (EFE).- (Camera: Antonello Nusca) Pope Francis held his weekly audicence on Wednesday at the Vatican.

During his catechesis, Francis addressed sadness, an "ailment of the soul" that "arises in the human heart when a desire or hope vanishes."

SOUNDBITES OF POPE FRANCIS:

"The sadness that creeps into the soul causes us to fall into a state of dejection. It is this second type of sadness that must be fought. In the heart of human beings there are hopes that are sometimes frustrated. It may be the desire to possess something that cannot be obtained; but also about something important, like the loss of affection. When this happens, it is as if the human heart fell off a cliff, and the feelings experienced are discouragement, weakness of spirit, depression, anguish... Sadness is like the pleasure of non-pleasure and it is like picking up a bitter candy and sucking on it. Despite being a natural emotion, sadness can become an evil state of mind. It is a cunning demon."
