Panama moves forward on a cultural megaproject to boost the economy

San Lorenzo (Colón), Aug 3 (EFE).- The restoration of important Spanish colonial fortresses, the construction of a visitors' center and at least a dozen trails are part of a mega-project of the Panamanian government and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to boost tourism and the economy of the impoverished Caribbean province of Colón, hit by high crime rates.

There are 21 interventions - agglomerated in a large ecotourism and cultural project - being carried out in Colon with US$48 million in IDB financing to rescue the area's historical, tourist and ecological potential. At least four works have already been completed and the rest are still in progress.
