Outrage in Peru over mayor's plan to demolish historic conflict monument

Lima, Mar 27 (EFE).- Relatives of victims of the 1980-2000 internal conflict gathered at the El Ojo que Llora memorial in Lima, Peru on Wednesday to protect the site and express their strong opposition to the mayor's plans to demolish it.

The monument, which serves as a poignant reminder of the thousands who disappeared or were killed during the years of terrorist violence, has been declared a national cultural heritage site.

Mayor Rafael López Aliaga's proposal to replace the monument with recreational spaces has provoked outrage from victims' families and human rights defenders, who stress the importance of preserving historical memory and respecting the rights to truth, justice and remembrance.
