Opposition supporters detained during protest against election rigging in Pakistan

Karachi, Feb 23 (EFE/EPA).- Supporters of opposition political parties protesting outside the Sindh assembly against alleged rigging of the February 8 general election were arrested in Karachi, Pakistan.

The protest came as the newly elected Sindh provincial assembly, in which the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) won a majority of 84 seats, was meeting for its inaugural session.

The assembly session was marred by allegations of election rigging by the opposition, prompting a major police response and the imposition of a ban on public gatherings under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the vicinity of the assembly.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari announced leadership appointments, including that of Murad Ali Shah as chief minister, and expressed his willingness to work with opposition parties to resolve their problems.
