PANAMA MIGRATION CRISIS

OAS launches guide to combat sexual violence in Panama's Darien rainforest

Panama City, Mar 27 (EFE).- The Organization of American States (OAS) launched a guide in Panama on Wednesday to address sexual violence against migrants crossing the Darien jungle, the dangerous border area with Colombia that serves as a migration route to the United States.

The gender-focused guide aims to work with the government, the UN, civil society and women's organisations to create a comprehensive plan of action to address violence, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and girls migrating through Darien.

Despite the difficulties in reporting and investigating these crimes, due to migrants' reluctance to delay their journey by becoming involved in judicial processes, the guide emphasises the need for a broader humanitarian, gender, intersectional and human rights approach to addressing and investigating sexual violence in this region.
