Night-time torchlight procession commemorates Martí's anniversary in Cuba

Havana, Jan 27 (EFE).- Several thousand young Cubans, led by President Miguel Diaz-Canel and his predecessor, Raúl Castro, took part in the traditional torchlight march in Havana on Saturday to commemorate the 171st anniversary of the birth of national hero Jose Marti (1853-1895).

The traditional evening procession began shortly after 20:00 local time (01:00 GMT, Sunday) on the steps of the University of Havana in the heart of Havana, amid Cuban flags and slogans of support for the revolution and its leader, former president Fidel Castro.

The procession covered just over a kilometre, winding through the city to the Fragua Martiana, a monument that honours the writer and national leader at the site where he was imprisoned for his pro-independence activities. (Camera: YANDER ZAMORA).
