NICARAGUA TRADITIONS

Nicaraguan Catholics celebrate the traditional “Gritería Chiquita"

León (Nicaragua) Aug 14 (EFE), (Camera: Renée Lucía Ramos).- Catholic believers in northwestern Nicaragua celebrated this Sunday the traditional "Gritería Chiquita", a religious festival in which songs are exchanged for royalties, in honor of the Assumption of Mary.

Hundreds of Nicaraguans took to the streets of the city of León, in northwestern Nicaragua, to sing songs dedicated to the Assumption of Mary at every religious altar they found on their way, and in return received gifts that mostly consisted of sweets or food.

The religious festival began with the already characteristic cry of "Who causes so much joy?!", from the main altar of the Cathedral of León, and the consequent response of the crowd: "The Assumption of Mary!".
