National Assembly votes on a proposal to protect the 'freedom' to abortion in French Constitution

Paris (France), January 29 (EFE).- The French National Assembly (lower house) will vote Tuesday on the government's proposal to amend the 1958 Constitution to include "guaranteed freedom" for women to terminate their pregnancies, protecting the right to abortion regardless of changes in power.

1- "In France today the right to abortion is not directly threatened, what we note however is that access to voluntary interruption of pregnancy is increasingly difficult for women in France. And we also see that at the gates of France, in other European countries that right has regressed".

2- "The fact of inscribing it as a constitutional right is also symbolically very strong. It means that it is now a constitutional right and it is the Constitution that represents the highest level of law in France."

3- "Inscribing the voluntary interruption of pregnancy in the Constitution will be an immense step in the recognition of the right to abortion but we know well that the law is not enough, we also need resources that allow women to access abortion."
