Muslims celebrate first day of Ramadan in Lebanon

Beirut (Lebanon), Mar 11 (EFE/EPA) - (Camera: Wael Hamzeh) Thousands of Muslims began Ramadan fasting and related rituals today on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in Beirut, Lebanon.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and it is believed that the revelation of the first verse of the Qur'an took place during its last 10 nights.

It is celebrated annually by praying during the night and abstaining from food, drink and sex between sunrise and sunset. It is also a time for socialising, especially at night after breaking the fast and moving all activities to the later hours of the day in most countries.
