COLOMBIA VIOLENCE

Murder of indigenous leader by FARC dissidents sparks outrage in Colombia

Toribío, Mar 18 (EFE).- Indigenous communities in south-western Colombia were calling for justice following the murder of Carmelina Yule Paví by FARC dissidents, as they denounced an attack on the caravan carrying her body in the department of Cauca.

The incident, in which shots were fired at the motorcade in the La Despensa sector, occurred when the cortège was on its way to the municipality of Toribío for the wake of Yule Paví.

The murder of Yule Paví, a peace and community welfare advocate, led the Colombian government to suspend the bilateral ceasefire with the group in several departments.

The Attorney General's Office has announced the creation of a special agency to oversee the criminal investigation into his murder, underscoring the urgent need for justice and greater security measures for indigenous communities. (Camera: ERNESTO GUZMÁN JR.).
