Millions of Chinese students take most closely monitored university entrance exam in history

Beijing, Jun 7 (EFE/EPA).- The first day of the Chinese university entrance exam, commonly known as the "gaokao", began on Wednesday, setting a new record with 12.91 million students taking part. These students are staking their future prospects on the test, which is under unprecedented scrutiny to prevent cheating.

On Monday, the ministries of education and public security announced a "zero tolerance" policy against exam-related crime, which will be in place from Wednesday until Thursday. They also stressed that law enforcement agencies in several regions have already launched investigations into several cases of cheating and fraud.

Authorities have listed several offences, including leaking questions and answers, hiring impostors, and acquiring or using electronic devices that can facilitate cheating during the exam. (Camera: WU HAO).
