MEXICO MIGRATION CRISIS

Migrants reject $110 Mexican deportation aid amid growing crisis

Villa Comaltitlán, Mar 28 (EFE).- Migrants participating in the "Viacrucis migrante" caravan in Mexico, originally from Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia, expressed on Wednesday their refusal to accept the Mexican government's offer of $110 a month in aid in exchange for voluntary deportation to their countries of origin.

The offer, intended to curb migration, was met with criticism from the migrants, who argue that the sum is insufficient and consider it a humiliation.

They stress the importance of support for their journey to the US over economic aid, underscoring the hardships they face along their route and calling for better alternatives to aid their passage and subsistence.

The growing number of undocumented migrants, which has seen a 77% increase in 2023 to over 782,000, coincides with rising tensions ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in both the US and Mexico. (Camera: JUAN MANUEL BLANCO).
