Mexican Holy Week tradition in Iztapalapa perseveres through 2nd pandemic

Mexico City, Apr 7 (EFE).- After years of observing Holy Week amidst fears of the coronavirus and related restrictions, hundreds of thousands of Mexicans returned to the streets of Iztapalapa, in the south of the capital, on Friday to celebrate the tradition's perseverance through its second pandemic.

The re-enactment of several events from Holy Week in Iztapalapa began in 1843, following a decade during which the neighbourhood was severely impacted by a cholera epidemic. The residents beseeched God to end the disease in exchange for an annual portrayal of the Passion of Christ, and according to tradition, their prayers were answered.

Since then, Iztapalapa's Holy Week has been celebrated continuously for 180 years. This Friday, the event once again attracted devout followers and curious spectators to witness the realistic depiction of Jesus Christ's final day of life. (Camera: ULISES ANDRADE).
