PM Meloni wins European elections in Italy

Rome, Jun 10 (EFE).- Far-right prime minister Giorgia Meloni has triumphed in Italy's European elections, winning 28.6 per cent of the vote, according to early results.

Meloni now aims to play a key role in the next European legislature, in which the far right is expected to gain more influence.

The Democratic Party (PD) followed with 25.70%, improving on previous forecasts under new leader Elly Schlein. Turnout was historically low, with about half of the Italian electorate abstaining, and turnout figures reached only around 49.5% by nightfall. (Camera: PABLO GARRIGÓS).
