Lula charges at the ILO against large fortunes and proposes a global tax for them

Geneva (Switzerland), June 13 (EFE).- The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, criticized this Thursday at the International Labor Organization (ILO) the great world fortunes, "with concentrations of income so absurd that they have their own space programs," and announced that Brazil, current president of turn of the G20, will promote in that forum the idea of creating a tax for the "super-rich."

STATEMENTS BY LUIZ INÁCIO LULA DA SILVA, PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL:

"The wars in Ukraine, in Gaza and so many other forgotten conflicts take us away from this ideal: workers who should be devoting themselves to their jobs and their families are sent to the front lines from where no one knows if they will return and who will be the winner. It was from the rubble of World War I that the United Nations emerged and when the International Labor Organization itself was founded. World War II ended with 70 million dead, 3% of the world's population at the time, mostly young men."

"Political extremism attacks silence minorities and the most vulnerable. Policy denial leaves gaps that are filled by adventurers who scatter lies and hatred. There can be no privileges for the extreme right, we have to recover democracy through the popular, progressive and democratic sectors. Recovering the role of the State as a facilitator of development is an essential task. Productivity growth has not been accompanied by an increase in wages or satisfaction, but has led to polarization."

"Brazil is pushing the proposal to create a tax to impose on the super-rich in the G20 debate."

"Never before has the world had so many billionaires. We are talking about 3,000 people who concentrate almost 15 trillion dollars. I repeat, I am talking about 3,000 people who concentrate almost 15 trillion dollars, more than the GDP of Japan, Germany, India and the United Kingdom added together and more than what many countries need to develop. This concentration of income is so absurd that there are people who have their own space programs, perhaps they will find a better planet than Earth, although the workers are the ones who have allowed them to have their wealth. (Applause) We do not need to find a way out on Mars, it is the Earth that needs our care. She is our home and our world."
