OLYMPICS PARIS 2024

Low enthusiasm in Paris for the Olympics

Paris (France), Mar 21 (EFE) - (Camera: Edgar Sapiña Manchado) Four months before the opening ceremony of the Paris Games, the French capital does not seem to feel enthusiasm for a global event that, for the moment, has brought a multitude of problems and still no benefits.

With a good number of streets up and some roads closed, Parisians are looking askance at the Olympic event that will have an impact on their daily lives. And not always in a good way.

"For now, people see a huge source of problems. It's as if they think France has got itself into a garden it doesn't need," Lionel Maltese, professor of sports marketing at the Kedge business school, explained to EFE.

SOUNDBITES IN FRENCH OF:

LÉO, FRENCH CITIZEN:

1. I think it's a bit overrated. I'm not sure there are going to be as many problems as they say. But transport is going to be a mess, I think. In terms of economic repercussions, I think it's going to be good.

2. Yes, I think it's a good idea. I mean, it's good for creating infrastructure that we wouldn't have done, but in the long term at least it's already done, so all the better.

OCTAVE, FRENCH CITIZEN:

1. As French people, we have more to lose. As Parisians, we have more to lose than to gain, especially on the question of organisation, if there are problems like we had with the Champions League final, where things went wrong between Liverpool and Real Madrid fans. That gave a bad image, especially of the police and the whole organisation, and we had the feeling that it had shocked Europe. So I think if it's a success, it should be normal, because all the previous Olympic Games went well. And if it's a failure, then it will be a resounding failure that will have a negative impact on France's image and therefore on its economy, tourism, etc., especially in Paris.

BERTILE, A FRENCH CITIZEN:

1. I think it will interfere a bit with the rhythm of life in Paris. I don't think we are fully prepared for the Olympics, but that remains to be seen. And I think a lot of Parisians are going to have to leave.

2. I think I'm going to have to leave with my job. In any case, we're going to telework, so that's it. So good for me, but I know not everybody will be that lucky, so it's going to be a bit complicated.

MARTINE MARIOTI, FRENCH CITIZEN:

1. I'm going to run away from the Olympics, that's for sure.

2. Yes, I like sport, on the contrary, but I will watch it on TV, it will be much better. There's going to be a huge crowd in the streets, we won't be able to move, it's going to be an ordeal.

AND FROM THOMAS DESCHAMPS, DIRECTOR OF THE PARIS TOURISM OBSERVATORY:

1. There's going to be a dimension of restriction during the Games, in terms of transport, in terms of the bazaar in the city, which could be a problem for some Parisians, but that evaporates very quickly when the opening ceremony starts. So yes, there are, there are some very positive aspects that come out of this organisation of the Games today, just as there are some negative ones.
