Lisbon Museum commemorates 50 years of Carnation Revolution with new exhibition

Lisbon, Apr 5 (EFE).- The Aljube Museum in Lisbon on Friday marked the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution with the exhibition "25 de Abril sempre" (25 April always).

This exhibition pays tribute to the enduring struggle for democracy, from the fight against dictatorship to contemporary movements for rights and freedoms.

Housed in a former political prison, the museum highlights the importance of remembering the past in order to protect the values of democracy.

Its director, Rita Rato, stresses that the exhibition is a means of engaging with the last fifty years of protest and civic participation aimed at guaranteeing and defending democratic rights. (Camera: PAULA FERNÁNDEZ).

TRANSLATION:

-The museum's long-term exhibition ends on April 25, 1974, and this year, as a way of celebrating the 50th anniversary of April 25, we honour all those who resisted overthrowing the dictatorship and conquering democracy, but also all those who have resisted defending democracy. This exhibition is also a way of revealing the various dynamics of protest and citizen participation that have taken place over the last 50 years to conquer new rights and defend democratic rights.

-More needs to be done so that more people can learn more about their past. This also helps us to understand our present, the importance of democratic values, our experiences and the defense of democracy and its fragility.
