PORTUGAL REVOLUTION

Lisbon commemorates Carnation Revolution

Lisbon, Apr 22 (EFE).- (Camera: Brian Bujalance) Lisbon was the nerve center of the Revolution of April 25, 1974, a bloodless military uprising that returned democracy to Portugal after 48 years of dictatorship.

FERRERA TRANSLATIONS:

1: "We live further from this area, but when we found out what was happening we came here, to Praça do Rossio, where we saw machine guns working. It was more or less that. We didn't get to Largo do Carmo, which was where the maximum concentration of the troops because the President of the Republic was in that place".

2: "This was at night and throughout the morning, when we started going to work, we just found out what was happening. At that time, nobody knew what a revolution was because this country was so closed by the dictatorship that no one knew what it was like to discuss politics or anything like that".
