Legislative controversy grips Taiwan's Parliament

Taipei, May 21 (EFE/EPA).- Legislative reforms in Taiwan turned the Taipei Legislative Assembly building into a battleground on Tuesday.

Banner-waving lawmakers engaged in heated debates over a controversial bill that, if passed, would force the president to deliver an annual state of the nation address and answer questions directly from the legislature.

The contentious session highlighted the deep divisions in Taiwan's political landscape as the bill seeks to increase presidential accountability. Supporters argue that it increases transparency, while opponents charge that it could overburden the presidency. (Camera: RITCHIE B. TONGO).
