Kathmandu's streets burst with colours as Nepali community celebrates Cow Festival

Kathmandu, Aug 31 (EFE/EPA).- The streets of Kathmandu came alive with vibrant colours and traditional costumes on Thursday as the Nepali community celebrated the "Gai Jatra" or Cow Festival at Basantapur Durbar Square.

This annual Hindu festival is celebrated to seek salvation and peace for family members who have passed away during the previous year.

A unique and moving feature of the procession is that children dress up as cows, an animal considered sacred in Nepal.

Local beliefs hold that these representations of cows help departed souls on their journey to heaven.

The festival, filled with somber reflections and moments of joy, serves as a bridge between the living and the fondest memories of the departed. (Camera: NARENDRA SHRESTHA).
