BRAZIL FLOODS

Inhabitants of Porto Alegre expected the arrival of floods but not as serious

Porto Alegre (Brazil), May 3 (EFE).- The inhabitants of the neighborhoods near the Guaíba River in the city of Porto Alegre expected the floods they faced this Friday but did not believe they would be as serious as those caused by the rains of recent days, which have left 37 dead.

STATEMENTS BY ITAMAR ADAMS, 51 YEARS OLD, MERCHANT (IN PORTUGUESE):

"THE SITUATION IS HORRIBLE [...] WE STILL HAVE MANY THINGS LEFT TO REMOVE. ON WEDNESDAY WE TOOK A TRUCK AND REMOVED WHAT WAS ON THE FIRST FLOOR, EVEN THE FRIDGE, BECAUSE WE KNEW THE WATER WAS GOING TO RISE A LOT."
