Indian Navy hands over pirates to Mumbai Police

Mumbai, Mar 23 (EFE/EPA).- Press release by Indian Navy Firm confirmed Saturday that on March 15, 2024, INS Kolkata intercepted Pirate Ship ex-MV Ruen in the Arabian Sea after receiving inputs from UKMTO.

The ship was suspected to be used for piracy attacks and hijacking. INS Kolkata shadowed the Pirate Ship, which changed course towards the Somali Coast upon sighting the INS Kolkata.

Armed pirates were observed on board. Despite being directed to stop according to International Law, the Pirate Ship refused and opened fire. INS Kolkata acted in self-defense, disabling the ship and forcing the pirates to surrender.

INS Subhadra joined the operation, and the Indian Navy deployed Marine Commandos via C17s. Aerial surveillance was conducted by Indian Navy P8I aircraft, Sea Guardian UAVs, and helicopters. All pirates surrendered, and 35 pirates and 17 crew members were taken into custody by Indian Naval ships. (Camera: DIVYAKANT SOLANKI).
